A few reasons why divorce isn't all bad

Kalamazoo residents who have gone through a divorce know how challenging and emotional it can be. What many of these people also know, however, is that divorce is not all bad. In fact, there are even some benefits to getting divorced if it is necessary.

First, people who end an unhappy marriage generally end up being healthier than if they had stayed in the marriage. Although we often hear about studies touting the health benefits of marriage, there are others that show that single people are healthier than those who are stuck in a bad marriage.

Second, divorce can lead to a more comfortable retirement - particularly if you are a woman. Research based on data from Social Security and the Census Bureau shows that divorced woman who do not remarry have the largest lifetime earnings growth. Many of these people were also able to put off collecting Social Security benefits, so ultimately they ended up with higher benefits.

Divorce can also be beneficial for other people in your life, including your children. Unfortunately, many people believe that staying in a broken marriage is better for their children. Your kids, however, are not blind to your unhappiness. There's a good chance they can tell that you and your spouse are not happy. While it may be difficult for them right away, eventually they will appreciate the fact that you are both happy, which brings us to our last point.

The greatest benefit of ending a marriage that is not working is that you can be happier. Going through a divorce is tough, and you may not feel happier right away, but there is a good chance that things will turn around and you will be much happier. In fact, a study from Kingston University in London found that women in particular were significantly happier for several years after a divorce.

While we would never advocate for divorce when it is not necessary, the fact of the matter is that sometimes it is. For those who know that ending a relationship is the best choice, it is important to know that good things await them.
